3rd Fact: Free Radicals are the Culprit of Cellular Rust
Many of us may have come across the metal oxidation phenomenon. The same thing happens inside our body, and it’s called “cellular rust”. Our body undergoes oxidation as a result of free radical damage. Free radicals are atoms or atomic groups containing odd number of electrons. Unpaired electrons are extremely reactive; hence, they have strong tendency to exist in a paired state to become stable. As a result, these unpaired electrons, indiscriminately plunder electrons from other parts of the body (cell membrane, DNA), causing a chain reaction which leads to substantial cell damage.
4th Fact: Free Radicals cause Accelerated Aging
It was once said that there were 300 theories on the cause of aging, but modern science proposed that free radicals reactions are the main culprit.
In 1954, University of Nebraska Medical Center Emeritus Professor, Dr. Denham Harman, M.D, PhD, proposed The Free Radical Theory of Aging . Harman believes that when free radicals damage the cell nuclei and mitochondria’s DNA, the rate of cellular damage exceeds the rate of cellular repair. When aged and dead cells are greater in numbers than new and functional cells, we then begin to lose our youthful attributes.
5th Fact: Free Radicals Promote Cardiovascular Disease
When cholesterol piles up in the inner walls of the blood vessels, plaques are formed. The process involves oxidized cholestorel, namely the low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also known as the bad cholestorel. LDL is easily oxidized by free radicals to form a foam-like substance; in which occludes the walls of the blood vessels.
6th Fact: Free Radicals Aggravate Cancer Cells Formation
Free Radicals are the main culprit for carcinogenesis to occur. Free Radicals cause sudden cell mutations, in which mutated cells will undergo abnormal division and proliferation. The proliferated cells are known as cancer cells. Cancer cells do not have any function but they will spread to different parts of the body and plunder the nutrients in the body, which may affect the growth of normal cells. To make matters worse, these cancer cells have the ability to multiply into unlimited number of times and metastasize or spread to other organs or tissues of the body. To fight against cancer, it is crucial to fight free radicals first!
7th Fact: Free Radicals trigger Cataract
According to statistics, the incidences of cataract are as follow:
60% in those 50 years and above
80% in those 60 years and above
Up to 90% in those 70 years and above.
The main cause of senile cataract is the gradual oxidation of the aqueous humour of the eyes by free radicals. Excessive exposure to light (especially ultraviolet radiation) or cigarette smoke will stimulate changes in the aqueous humour to produce harmful free radicals. These free radicals are powerful oxidizing agents; which trigger a series of biochemical chain reactions inside the aqueous humour to gradually form cataract. It is therefore important to protect the eyes when exposed to intense sunlight and stop smoking.
8th Fact: Free Radicals Multiply when you Suppress Your Bladder
The impact of suppressing the urge for clearing the bladder is always negative. Besides reducing the immune defense of the bladder mucosa, opportunistic pathogens cause acute cystitis and hematuria, and even renal diseases. Professor Chen Chao Feng from Medical College Physiology Research Institute of National Taiwan University pointed out that the longer we control micturition, the more free radicals we create. Free radicals may cause bladder mucosa cells to perish. Chronic damage results in weakened bladder muscles and increased serum concentration of free radicals. In addition, suppressing micturition can also rapidly elevate the blood pressure.
9th Fact: Exercise create more free radicals in the body
Exercise is good for health. The benefits include helping us to relax, preventing cardiovascular diseases and keeping our joins flexible. However, you may not be aware that we produce higher level s of free radicals during exercise. This is because our body needs lots of oxygen for exercising resulting in the production of more free radicals.
The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine suggests that people 40 years old and above should refrain from doing strenuous exercise in order to avoid producing excessive free radicals. On the other hand, take more anti-oxidant supplements to vitamin C, E, beta-carotne and consume a wide variety of vegetables and fruits to neutralize excess free radicals in the body.
10th Fact: Free Radicals Flourish in Glucose
In recent years, people have too much to eat, they exercise less, resulting in an increase to the number of people with diabetes. It is estimated that at least 1 million people in this world are being identified as too “sweet”!
Preliminary research indicates four possible mechanism that suggest free radicals as the culprit:
- When the blood sugar levels are high, intrinsic antioxidants that neutralize toxic free radicals in the body are depleted.
- Free radicals damage the Islets of Langerhans causing the glucose metabolism to become abnormal.
- When glucose level in the bloodstream is high, it will undergo “self oxidation”, resulting in an excessive release of free radicals.
- High blood sugar levels cause proteins in the body to convert to glucose, resulting in cell damage. In the process of converting proteins to glucose, massive free radicals are produced. This vicious cycle leads to irreversible complications. One research has shown that vegetarians and people who frequently consume antioxidants have lower chances of developing diabetes.
